2010 - Ashleigh Francis - AUSTRALIA

In recent years I have supported Variety the Children's Charity. I regularly volunteer my time with their head office, mostly helping within the accounts area. I also contributed my time to help with various events in which Variety, The Children's Charity, hold such as the 2010 'Hot to Trot' event. For the hot to trot I helped raise over $3500 in raffle sales on the night.

"Just wanted to send you a BIG thank you for all your help on Friday night at the Hot to Trot!

You were wonderful raffle sellers and great barrel girls. With thanks to your help we raised over $3,500 on the raffle and just over $60,000 on the whole event. We hope to have you involved in more Variety events this year.

Kind regards,

Grace Proust

Events Co-ordinator

Variety, The Children's Charity, NSW"

One thing that I have always loved to do is volunteering for charity functions. I believe that when you see all the planning and organising that goes into these events it makes you feel as though you are part of the big picture to help people in need. A recent charity function that I volunteered for was at the ASX charity routers gala dinner at the Westin. I helped set the table seating which seated 10 people with about 200 tables.

Whilst volunteering my spare time for Charity I have also sold chocolates to people within my community. Although it raised a small amount for charity every dollar counts.

In my most recent fundraising efforts I decided to put on a raffle drive to help raise funds for Variety, The Children's Charity. I wanted to portray my message that

"we can't do everything but we can do something, so do not refuse to do the something you can do!"

I wrote down the steps that I needed to do to have a successful charity raffle drive.

Step 1: Find a Venue

I approached over 15 venues with my proposal which included my authorization to fundraise from Variety, The Children's Charity. Most venues are extremely keen to allow me to run a raffle within their venue. After much consideration I decided on Establishment on George St.

Step 2: Find Donators/Sponsors

I approached over 30 businesses within the CBD & Eastern Suburbs area. When people knew that I was trying to raise funds for charity they were quick to jump on board. I was amazed at how the community came together to help such a good cause.

To name a few:

  • Dinner for 4 people at Uccello, Ivy's restaurant kindly donated by Justin Hemmes - Merivale valued at $500
  • Two Christopher Hanna Hair Vouchers
  • A Mu Hair Voucher Valued at $200
  • A unisex belt valued at $450 thanks to Deidrict the cat - Darlinghurst
  • A Dermologica Skin care pack Valued at $175
  • Sparkling Wine Valued at $150

Businesses kindly donated over $2000 worth of prizes for my raffle drive

Step 3: Sell Raffle Tickets and Draw

Straight after work I went down to Establishment and sold tickets for 3-4 hours for four days.

I did the whole process by myself and the draw date I raised over $1800 for Variety, The Children's Charity.

Whilst working a full time job, studying and fundraising, I believe I have accomplished a small part the something that I can do to help children in need.

I have also been working with The Ronald McDonald House in Sydney, Australia. The Ronald McDonald house provides housing and "escapes" for families with seriously ill children. In September they held the biggest gala ball in NSW. I organised and donated a "Meal for a Meaning" and with that I raised over $2000 for the RMDH.

Moving forward I hope to raise more funds and awareness for Variety, The Children's Charity, The Ronald McDonald House and in recent weeks World Vision.

Although I cannot do everything, I can do soemthing, and I will not refuse to do the something I can do to help people in need.
