ASPEC is a non-profit corporation founded in 1982 by a group of parents whose children suffered from neuromotor damage (cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, arthrogryposis and stroke) and were over the age of 18 an age before which they were accepted in specialized institutions in the country. The goal of the institution is to provide rehabilitation and social integration to young adults who are over 18 years old and who are affected by neurological damage.

Most of those who benefit from the work of the institution had access to special education programs, however, after finishing school, they and their families realized that due to the severe and multiple limitations caused by the cerebral palsy and other such disabilities, they did not have the necessary skills to cope in a normal work environment, that is to say, to be productive and independent workers.

In the early days it mainly specialized in organizing recreational activities alongside the parents. Later in 1989 the program received support from health professionals and the municipality of Las Condes, thus converting ASPEC into a rehabilitation centre.

The centre was built in stages and with lightweight materials donated by local people and corporations. The construction of the centre was achieved thanks to donations of all kinds.

ASPEC is the only place in Chile where adults with these conditions can receive care, this is because society tends to focus more on supporting children affected by these disabilities, forgetting that these children will one day grow into adults and will need to develop skills in order to function in all areas of life.

ASPEC has a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified professionals to support patients.

Some beautiful work is carried out within its walls. In the mornings, patients spend their time doing creative activities such as drawing and creating beautiful patchworks. During the afternoon they spend most of their time in rehabilitation sessions where they are supported by kinesiologists and phonoaudiologists.

Work will begin this year on a new center which will open in 2013; it will be the largest of its kind and will be equipped with specialized technology.

The Miss Chile Organization has supported this cause since the broadcast of the Chilean docu-reality “It is not enough to be beautiful”. The aim of the organization is to publicize the work of ASPEC and obtain support for the cause. Participants of the contest frequently visit Aspec where they have the opportunity to share with and get to know the patients and staff. The first duty of the elected Miss Chile 2012, Camila Recabarren, was to visit the centre. Support has been provided through organizing various charity events. The organization will also be present at the launch of the new center in late August 2013.
