Last week Miss World Megan Young returned to the Philippines for her triumphant homecoming celebrations. During her time in the Philippines, Megan and Miss World Chairman Julia Morley made several visits to Miss World Organisation supported institutes to pledge further support.
The Philippines General Hospital (PGH) is the flagship hospital in the Philippines. Established in 1907, it is the largest hospital in the country, and has room for 1,500 patients. Miss World Chairman Julia Morley, Miss World Megan Young, & Miss World Philippines Director Cory Quirino met with the Director of the hospital last weekend to discuss ways in which MWO could help.
After a tour of the hospital and this meeting with the director, Julia Morley announced a pledge of $25,000 on behalf of Beauty with a Purpose to build an onsite school and outdoor play area for the children in long term care at the PGH. Currently there is minimal access to stimulating and educational activities for the children. With this donation from MWO, the hospital will be able to help the development of the children, supplying a whole array of educational classes and schedules, from mathematics to music, for all ages.
Cory Quirino also pledged support from the Miss World Philippines Organisation, who would provide funds of 3 million Philippines Pesos to go towards a new emergency treatment ward at the hospital. A much needed addition to the hospital, this new ward will go a long way to saving many peoples lives in the Philippines.
During their stay in the Philippines, Julia Morley & Miss World also paid a visit to the Tuloy Foundation. Founded in 1993 by Father Rocky G. Evangelista, SDB, the Tuloy Foundation is a safe environment which homes children who would otherwise be living in the streets. Starting with just 12 children in a 40 sqm room, the Foundation has grown over the past 17 years, serving more than 10,000 children in need. The small room is now a village on 4.5 hectares of land in southern Metro Manila, currently caring for 900 children.
Julia Morley says that Father Rocky is “The person I admire the most in the world” and his amazing work in providing a new life for children marginalized by society is an inspiration to us all. The Tuloy Foundation offers education to the children along many different paths, whether it be in mechanics, mathematics, carpentry, or a dozen other ways. Through this they can get themselves off the streets and build for a brighter future.
Julia Morley pledged $10,000 a year for the next three years from Beauty with a Purpose to support the truly outstanding work of the Tuloy foundation, which relies solely on donations to continue its work.
