Suriname Tree Fest Awareness

Miss Suriname 2010, Joann Jie Foeng Sang got her hands dirty with other famous guests to plant the first of many fruit trees on May 5th. The Miss Suriname Organisation  joined forces with the Ministry of Agriculture to plant 150 fruit trees at 50 schools over the next three months. The first tree was planted at BO Maretraite in North Paramaribo.

The Miss Suriname Organisation came up with the idea after speaking to local schools and gaining their support and permission to plant a fruit tree at their schools. Once the trees have been planted the children will look after them, picking and eating the fruit once blossomed. The scheme is to increase awareness and knowledge about healthy eating as well as increase the number of fruit trees in the area.

The Agricultural Ministry will assist all the schools with teaching the children how to care for their trees. First Lady Ingrid Waldring-Bouterse applauded this initiative and has urged the organisation to take this project to other districts as well.

What a wonderful project to support Joann.
